March Special of the Month

The enclosed fastener is part of the directional control system of a hydraulic transmission used in off-road equipment. Utilizing this fastener, the transmission is adjusted after final assembly and periodically in the field.

With the previous fastener design, adjustments were made using a recessed hexagon socket at the threaded end of the part. Being exposed to the environment, this recess became filled with dirt and residue, inhibiting adjustment. The design was modified by replacing the internal hexagon with a larger, external hex. Adjustment time was significantly reduced.

The previous fastener design was the cause of periodic head failure. Greater strength and the elimination of costly machining was achieved by cold forming the part on our Formax 54L heading equipment. Process and design insured that rigid specifications for perpendicularity of the thread to the bearing surface was maintained. CPKs of greater than 1.33 were achieved on the designated characteristics, while the FMEA process approach was used to anticipate problems prior to occurrence and to establish preventive measures in the design phase.

All manufacturing operations, including heat treating, were performed in-house. The parts were shipped on time and future orders are expected.
